NSW State Titles - Moorebank - 21st-24th February, 2008With all the recent rain Sydney had been receiving it was a worry whether the Moorebank track would hold up for the event, but thankfully we had 4 beautiful sunny days, in which the track stood up to its excellent reputation.
Thursday gave everyone a look at the new layout of the track, and a chance for some much needed practice. With the changes made to the front straight, practice was definitely appreciated by all, no-one realised how much concern the very straight forward and ordinary looking triples were going to cause the drivers.
Due to numbers, the first round of qualifying for the Truggies was held late on the Thursday afternoon, which brought the event into full swing with the buggies first round being held first thing Friday morning, after Concourse.
Friday went smoothly, with 42 entries for Truggies, it was obvious to all that it would be stiff competition. The line-up including Ian Haley, Craig Laughton, Ron Maya, John Bateman, Brad Smith, Robert Flanagan, John Grupillo, Chris Russel, Justin Millan, David Burgess, Aaron Stringer, Mark Stringer, Michael Zlotkowski, Frank Fantini, Craig Lewis, KC Shore, and of course our own Steve Toon.
Buggies didn't have it any easier with the likes of Jason Dyckhoff, Wayne Walker, Craig Laughton, Ian Haley, Ari Bakla, Steven Drygalla, Theo Assa, Stephen Sneddon, Kevin Lewis, Michael Zlotkowski, Justin Millan, and Jarred King being just a minority of names amongst the crowd of racers.
With not enough numbers to run a Monster Truck class, it was good to see the 1/10th Stadium Trucks make a good showing with 11 trucks - being Jarred King, Stephen Francis, Lindsay Frost, Jarrod Pace, Chris Kizmann, Gerhard Maya, Paul Selimovic, Jason Broers, Michael Lloyd, Joel Dotta, and Dan Jolly.
At the end of the Stadium A-Main, with an unfortunate turn for Jarred, it brought Stephen Francis a Podium 1st, with Lindsay Frost by his right in 2nd, and Chris Kizmann on his left in 3rd.
Unfortunately Steve dropped out of his semi mainly due to a number of outside factors, along with quite a few other fantastic local and interstate drivers. The 45 minute Truggy A-Main was not to be missed. The first 20 minutes had everyone guessing who was going to be the one to bring it home. While Craig Laughton was giving them all a run for their money for some time, an unfortunate break led him to retire from the race after only 46 laps, leaving it for Ian Haley to take the podium 1st.
David Burgess kept it steady and took the 2nd place, while Rob Taylor and Justin Millan were fightin for position all the way to the finish line. Justin was able to get past Rob in the final lap to take the Podium 3rd.
The Buggies also were not to be missed, with some of the best drivers in the country racing it out against one-another. Jason Dyckhoff started in grid position 1, dropped to 2nd for the first 3 minutes where Craig Laughton and Nickolas Drygalla were pushing eachother around the track in 1st, then Jason managed to take the first position all the way to the Podium, with Craig Laughton and Wayne Walker steadily striving for the 2nd spot. It was a very close 2nd that went to Craig - both Jason and Craig finishing on 63 laps, with Wayne Walker a tight 3rd.
We would like to Congratulate those members of the LRRCC Club that have spent their own personal time and energy in helping to create and up-keep the track itself throughout all of the rain-days Sydney has received this summer. We would also like to congratulate all of the competitors, and thank all of the "pit-people", there are more and more girls pitting these days and even girl racers are becoming less un-common.
